How to paint an outboard motor

  1. Prepare the surface - it should be clean and free of dirt, grease, grime, rust, etc.
  2. Protect the surrounding area from overspray - cover
with plastic drop sheets, paper, etc.
  3. Remove the lid. If use of a screwdriver is required, take care not to puncture the can.
  4. Shake vigorously for approximately 1 minute and periodically during use
  5. Check that paint will not harm the surface - If in doubt, test paint in an inconspicuous area first.
  6. Hold aerosol can approximately 20-30 cm (8”-12”) from surface. Aim nozzle opening at surface.
  7. Press nozzle and apply paint by spraying from side to side then up and down in overlapping strokes.
  8. Clean nozzle for future reuse by inverting can and spraying until no paint is visible.

Tips for best results:

  • Use aerosol when can temperature is between 150C and 300C (600F and 860F)
  • A primer may be required before painting. Check label directions to see if a primer is recommended and, if so, for what applications.
  • It is better to apply several light coats than one heavy coat. See label directions for recommended recoating time.

Why should I repaint my boat engine?

Painting your boat's engine can restore the factory look and it also provides essential protection against rust and corrosion. A well-maintained painted surfaces prevents grime buildup, making regular cleaning easier. As paint ages and discolors, it may become harder to spot oil leaks or other fluids. Keeping your engine freshly painted and clean may make it easier to catch small leaks before they become bigger problems.

What type of inboard or outboard engine paint should I use?

Each type of paint has its own unique characteristics to meet your own personal preferences and requirements. Humidity may impact dry times.

Sierra's marine engine paints are engineered with a fast-drying, heat- and solvent-resistant formula for long-lasting protection against corrosion, saltwater, and UV damage. Check your engine specs to match the factory color. But it's important to understand the basic differences between our paint types.

Choosing between lacquer, enamel, and acrylic enamel paints depends on the desired finish, drying time, and durability. Lacquer paint dries quickly—often within 10 minutes— and provides a glossy finish, making it ideal for items like chairs, bookcases, and picture frames. However, it may require multiple coats for durability. Enamel paint takes longer to dry but offers a high-gloss, durable finish suitable for toys, metal patio furniture, and toolboxes. It provides strong resistance to wear and tear. Acrylic enamel paint is a balance between the two, drying within an hour while offering both gloss and satin finishes. It’s ideal for surfaces like wicker, craft foam, and furniture where flexibility and a smooth appearance are desired. When selecting a paint, consider the surface material and the level of durability needed for the best results.
