I recently purchased a new Lund 18 ft boat. Lund Sells their boats with Shorelandr trailers. The stock trailer jack was typical, really designed to go up and down, but not designed to move the boat more than a couple of inches without a lot of frustration, and to be honest, risk. I keep my boat in the garage, but it is a side bay that does not have a straight in shot from the driveway. So, every time I use my boat, I need to swing the tongue end out to a place where I can hook up my truck. This is all on very smooth concrete. The stock trailer jack required serious "kicking" to get the wheel pointed in the right direction to get it to roll. On top of that, the swing pivot moved way too much when trying to move the trailer - I was worried it would fail and the trailer would drop onto the tongue (or my leg!)
When I received the Sierra Deluxe Plus I was very impressed with the build of the jack. And, since the wheel assembly spins on a separate bearing, I was certain it was going to make a difference. It also had an 8" (versus 6") spoked wheel which I figured should also help mobility. I installed it in about 20 minutes, then tested it out. Here is what I found out;
1. Jacking up and down felt similar, but I was not expecting much difference here. The important thing is the Deluxe Plus has two grease zerks on it so keeping the jack in good working order will be much easier.
2. The swing pivot was MUCH more robust than the stock jack. While moving the boat there is no lateral slop that makes you feel like the jack is going to just fold over.
3. The most important thing - moving the boat. This jack is going to make my life much easier when I take my boat out. If the wheel is in the worst position (90 degrees out from the desired direction of travel), I still have the nudges the wheel to help it turn, but I can now do it by just pushing on it with the ball of my foot versus kicking the heck out of it. And, once I start moving changing direction is pretty easy.
So, overall, I am very please with the Sierra Deluxe Plus. I would recommend it to anyone who needs a little more mobility in their mid sized boat trailer.
